ViaNet will be moving their DS3 from Berkeley to San Francisco shortly after 5pm. This will briefly disconnect our entire network, followd by about an hour when our DSL system will be disconnected.

We will be taking upgrading the operating system on the main server from 8 to 10pm. this should only involve being offline for between 15 minutes and half an hour, but will also involve a series of reboots later in the evening (as upgraded software and add-ons are compiled). The secondary DNS and email relays will be online though this, so the network should function normally and email will be queued for delivery to the mail server once the upgrade is complete.

We will be upgrading the software on the router which handles all our DSL lines between 1am and 6am on Sunday, April 21 (which, incidentally, is the first day of TV Turnoff Week). This should take only a short time, but in the event of a serious issue cropping up, we're blocking off 5 hours for it.

We have received additional notice from Zocalo/ViaNet that they will begin shutting down others of the old Zocalo transit links (which are being replaced by a ViaNet DS3); on the 8th they will be shutting down the links to Sprint and BBN. Please contact us if you have an interruption lasting more than a few minutes during this.

The DSL circuit move is finally scheduled! It will happen 17:30-18:30 on Thursday. You can expect all DSL lines to be interrupted for the actual switch-over, with intermittant interuptions for an hour or so after the switch as we test everything on the new circuit.

Zocalo/ViaNet have requested that we schedule the ATM circuit retermination (discussed in several previous attempts below) for next Wednesday, to allow them adequate time to resolve a Cisco issue and test the new rig.

They did not get the cable fixed. We will look into it again today, though we will probably not make the change till Thursday (the 28th). This change urgently needs to happen, though, since the old DS3 at Zocalo/ViaNet could apparently go away with no advance notice so we might need to switch this as soon as they get the new one available.

12 midnight - We will hopefully be installing the new router, which we were unable to install on the 8th. This will move us up from a 1600 series to a 2500 series Cisco, so it'll be a nice upgrade. Downtime should be in the 15 to 30 minutes range and will not affect general access to the Net (except for dialup), but it will take all hosted sites offline and prevent DSL users from accessing our servers during the upgrade.

12 noon to 12 midnight - We have a major network re-wiring to do, since the way the network is used has changed dramatically since we first put it together. DSL usage will be unaffected, but dialup access, email and DNS/web services will be internittantly affected. For the most part, none of the interruptions should be longer than 15 minutes or so though they will occur off-and-on through this time period; we will be replacing the main router at the location that services dialup/hosting/colocation and user services, which will probably cause an outage of an hour or so.

This isn't a planned outage, but a reminder that the rainy season has started (basically today) and that, with PG&E's mismanagement and financial problems we can probably expect more blackouts than usual this year.
